The one kilometre long Tidenham Tunnel in the Forest of Dean, just across the River Wye from Chepstow, is now open to walkers!
Reopening Tidenham Tunnel on the disused Chepstow to Monmouth railway line has been a long held aspiration for local walkers and cyclists. And now it is open for us to enjoy.
Our six mile walk takes in the medieval story of Chepstow before we embark on a stretch of Offa's Dyke in order to reach the new tunnel path.
Offa's Dyke was built in the eighth century by order of the King of the Mericans. It's purpose was to keep the Welsh out of England. Our route follows part of the Offa's Dyke National Trail. Expect delightful woodland walking and views of the magnificent River Wye far below.
The Wye Valley Greenway will allow us to enjoy the River Wye up close as we stroll along the level railway path.
There is a hill at the beginning of this walk as we journey across country to get to the railway line. As always we will take this hill nice and steady with rests along the way.
We finish at Tintern Abbey where we will organise lift sharing for our return to Chepstow.
The tunnel is illuminated and has a newly laid gravel path running though it.
As is our custom a set of written notes will be emailed out after the walk to help you hold on to what you have picked up from our walk along the new Wye Valley Greenway.
A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
