Building on the success of our Special Day Trip to Usk in September (thank you for all the positive feedback) we are off to explore more of the beautiful Welsh county of Monmouthshire with a visit to the delightful riverside county town of Monmouth.
The Romans were here with a strategically important fort, known as Blestium, on the supply routes for their conquest of Wales. There is the remains of a Benedictine priory to consider.
At Monmouth Castle Edward II was held prisoner before his transfer to Berkeley Castle where he died. Henry V was born here in 1387. Long before that, the castle was established in the late eleventh century as a border base for the Norman invasion of Wales.
The medieval Monnow Bridge is the only remaining fortified River Bridge in the country and has seen a lot of action over the centuries since the first wooden bridge was constructed in the middle of the twelfth century.
We have plenty of time to explore the town thoroughly and there will also be time to enjoy the local cafes and eateries if you wish. There are also park and riverside options for those who would prefer to picnic.
As is our custom a set of written notes will be emailed out to walkers after the walk. This will allow you to hold on to what you have picked up from our exploration of Monmouth.
A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
Lifts are usually available from Bristol and Bath. Please use the comment board below to facilitate this.
