Discover Bristol: St Mary Redcliffe and the Harbourside
Details
Get your week off to a great start with two hours of guided walking in attractive surroundings with pleasant company. The focus is very much on getting to know your fellow walkers, fresh air and gentle exercise.
On these Discover Bristol tours Steve shares his extensive research on local wildlife, history, geography and geology. There is also plenty of time to chat about random stuff that comes up along the way.
Our walk takes us around the Redcliffe end of the Floating Harbour in search of the minutiae of history. We will marvel at the magnificence of St Mary Redcliffe Church. Queen Elizabeth may, or may not, have described it as, 'the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England'. We will also seek out the remains of Bristol's last glass making kiln and hear the tragic story of Thomas Chatterton.
It's a while since we have visited this area so we will make sure we find some new and interesting historical stuff to add to our growing hoard of timely treasures.
We take coffee at the end of our Discover Bristol walks. This time we will be at the Arnolfini Café.
This is a great opportunity for a bit of leg stretching and some tongue wagging along the way. Exercise, socialising and learning are three out of the five steps to mental wellbeing.
As is our custom a historical travelogue style article based on Steve's research notes will be sent out to participants after the event.
A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
