Let's celebrate the WINTER SOLSTICE

We usually go to Stonehenge for the Winter Solstice. This year we are doing something different.

Starting out in Chew Magna we will explore the story of this delightful little village. We will hear of the role the village played in efforts to save Bristol from Luftwaffe bombing. We will discover Church Ale House, which was built in the late fifteenth century and the Seventeenth Century School that is now the village hall.

We will then walk the mile and a half to Stanton Drew where we will explore the extensive remains of the stone circle and here about midwinter life for our Neolithic ancestors.

After sunset we will retire to the nearby Druid's Arms, a characterful country pub with its own ancient stones in the garden.

We will then lift share back to Chew Magna.

A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.

As is our custom a full set of written notes will be emailed out after the walk to help you hold on to what you have picked up from our winter solstice visit to Stanton Drew Stone Circle.

Lifts are usually available from Bristol and Bath. Please use the comment board below to facilitate this.
