NEW WALK Discover the Story of Bristol (Monday): Medieval Monasticism
Details
Get your week off to a good start with two hours of guided walking in attractive surroundings with pleasant company. The focus is very much on getting to know your fellow walkers, fresh air and gentle exercise.
On the first Monday of each month we are working our way chronologically through the history of the City of Bristol from its medieval origins to its twentieth century post war transformation.
Last month we took an overview of the Late Medieval Period (1066 to 1485). This month we are focussing in on the monastic tradition of that time.
On these Story of Bristol sessions Steve shares his extensive research on the history of the city. There is also plenty of time to chat about interesting finds that we discover along the way.
We have already covered the Medieval heart of Old Bristol and the castle. Today we are starting out from St Mary Redcliffe and will take in the sites of all nine of Bristol's Medieval monasteries: St. Mary Redcliffe, St. Augustine's Abbey, St. Mark's Hospital, Whitefriars (Carmelite), St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Nunnery of St. Mary Magdalen, Greyfriars (Franciscan), St. James's Priory (Benedictine) and Blackfriars (Dominican).
The land to the west of the River Frome was very much God's Country during this period. We will discover monasteries, priories and friaries and learn to tell the difference. We will hear of nuns and monks and hospitals and poor houses. We will hear of plague and how the church responded.
After our Monday walks we always take coffee in a local cafe. Today we will be in St. James's Cafe next to the Bus Station
A set of historical research notes will be emailed out to walkers after our walk. This will allow you to hold on to what you have picked up from our exploration of Medieval Monasticism in Bristol.
A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
