A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.

The caves at Cheddar were home to our prehistoric ancestors during the last great Ice Age. Cheddar Gorge lies at the very dawn of British prehistory.

But, there is so much more to this ancient settlement.

King Alfred was here and the site of an Anglo-Saxon Royal Palace has been found by archaeologists.

As early as 1130 AD, the beauty of the Gorge was recognised as one of the ‘Four wonders of England’. We will explore the subsequent development of Cheddar as one of England’s ‘must see’ tourist attractions.

Our five mile countryside walk takes us from the mouth of the gorge up onto the hills above. From here the very best views down into the gorge and across the Somerset Levels can be found.

Descending Jacob’s Ladder back into the World Famous Cheddar Gorge we will hear of the immense geological timescales that are represented by the rocks here.

We will explore the stories of our earliest ancestors, including the incredible evidence of human cannibalism.

A set of written notes will be emailed out to walkers after our walk. This will allow you to hold on to what you have picked up from our exploration of Cheddar Gorge and the story of British prehistory.
