On these Story of Bath sessions Steve shares his extensive research on the history of the city. There is also plenty of time to chat about interesting finds that we discover along the way.

Having discovered the Origins of Bath on our first tour and explored beyond the city walls in search of the Early Georgians on our second, we are now going across the River Avon in search of New Bath.

Until the Pulteneys inherited the estate, Bathwick was little more that fields and a small village. If the Pulteney’s plans had come to fruition in their fullness this area would have been the largest planned urban estate in Europe with a square to rival Queen Square, a crescent to rival the Royal Crescent and an octagonal terrace of more than one hundred houses.

What we are left with from this grand scheme is still pretty amazing! Come with us on an expedition of discovery into what could have been and what was as Bath grew beyond its traditional confines.

Amongst all this grandeur we will also find the everyday: a prison, a hidden churchyard and the underneath of Bath.

We will meet John Pinch and hear how he took architecture to new levels beyond those dreamt of by the early Bath designers. We will explore the only remaining Georgian pleasure garden in the country and learn how it evolved and changed with the city.

There is just so much to see across the river. And if the Pulteneys had not built their bridge, it is possible that none of it would have existed.

As is our custom, a set of Steve's historical research notes will be sent out to participants after the event. This will allow you to revisit with family and friends and explore some more.

A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
