Myths retold is a series of performances of some of the greatest stories in the world, presented in collaboration with the British Museum. Enter a flickering cave of wonder for a wild exploration of epic and myth.

Having been victorious in battle at Troy, Odysseus sets off home to his wife, but the journey takes an unfathomable ten years. A play-thing of the gods, he is toyed with, tested, stripped of his hero's wealth and his warrior bravado, so that when he finally returns, even his wife doesn't recognise him. Buffeted by the Fates, yet helped by the indomitable owl-eyed goddess Athena, Odysseus’ epic voyage is the journey of Everyman, from the cock-sureness of youth into the wisdom of age – a male ego dissolved by feminine mystery.

This compulsive, lucid performance by two of Britain’s leading storytellers – Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden – is true to the momentum of a rattling good tale, the wry humour, poetic reflection, and the profound human observation of Homer.

Hugh Lupton is widely acclaimed throughout the UK as the master of poetic storytelling. His distinctive style focuses on richly crafted use of the English language. An award-winning performer and writer, he has collaborated widely with singers, musicians and other performers. In 2005, he won the Classical Association prize for ‘the most significant contribution to the public understanding of the classics’ with Daniel Morden. His first novel, based on the life of poet John Clare, was published in 2010 and his song One in a Million (co-written with Chris Wood) won the BBC 2 Folk Awards for Original Song of the Year 2005. Daniel Morden is one of the leading exponents in the art of storytelling in the UK and leader of the acclaimed Devil's Violin Company. For 23 years he has delighted audiences all over the world at storytelling festivals including those in Vancouver, Oslo and the Yukon. He is a regular at the major literature festivals at Hay, Bath and Cheltenham. In London he has performed at venues from the Barbican and National Theatre to the British Museum. The award-winning, Abergavenny-based storyteller has also worked on TV and radio and published books for both children and adults.
