Join us Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 12:00 noon for a look at how the City of Hamilton is improving transit accessibility. Nick Hilton will present his Accessible Media Production capstone project, which included an audit with end-user testing on the HSRNow mobile app.

Guest Speakers:
Jay Adams is a member of the Customer Experience & Innovation team within the City of Hamilton’s HSR Transit Division. HSR’s goal is to increase ridership on conventional transit and to make transit the first choice in transportation for Hamilton residents. To achieve this goal, Jay’s team is leading the (Re)envision the HSR initiative – the largest customer consultation in HSR’s 147 year history – to look for ways to improve the experience of riding transit in Hamilton. With a key focus on honouring equity, diversity and inclusion, the transit agency is exploring how it can increase customer satisfaction for persons with disabilities by continuing to dismantle barriers to a positive experience. One of Jay’s responsibilities is to provide a suite of user-friendly, accessible transit trip-planning tools. Last fall, HSR released the latest tool in this suite, a mobile app called ‘HSRnow’ for iOS and Android devices.

Nick Hilton is an accessibility professional with a background in digital content production and accessible ebook production and distribution. He is the Digital and Distribution Manager for Coach House Books and also works as a contractor part-time for Fable Tech, creating and editing training videos that teach about accessibility best practices.
Nick is a graduate of Mohawk’s Accessible Media Production program and recently received his CPACC certification from the IAAP. While he enjoys working in the digital publishing industry, Nick is looking to transition into a career dedicated fulltime to accessibility.

Nick will be sharing his AMP Capstone project with the HSR’s Customer Service and Innovation team. Nick spent several months evaluating the accessibility of the HSR’s new trip planning mobile app by conducting a WCAG audit and end user testing. He is going to talk about the development of the project, share some of his insights on end user testing, and also some of the recommendations he put forward to HSR to further improve the app for accessibility.
