Alt Text Sucks! How do we improve it?

Details

Alt text is a hot topic in the field of accessibility. After conducting the initial survey on Alt Text, we discovered that our suspicions were correct: Alt Text is not meeting the needs of those of us with disabilities. How can we improve it? One of the questions asked on the survey was for respondents to think outside the box and provide ideas on how to improve Alt Text. The survey results were presented at the ICCHP (International Conference on Computers Helping People with Disabilities) and published in the Springer Lecture Series for the conference. The second iteration of the Alt text Survey is currently open for respondents. The combined results will be part of this A11yHam webinar, with researchers Karen McCall and Bevi Chagnon, that discusses what is missing from Alt Text, the new ISO standard for Text description/alternative text, and where we go from here. How can we improve the experience of those of us with disabilities when it comes to complex images in digital content?

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

#a11yHAM events are free and open to anyone interested in discussing digital accessibility and inclusion. This Zoom event will include a live transcript created by Otter.ai Teams. Please connect with us if you would like any alternative accommodations or have suggestions for improving our accessibility.

Thank you in advance for your support of this physical distancing meetup!
