Session Description
In 2015, Evelyn Sakura Brokering made the bold decision to move to America by herself to attend high school in California. Until that point, she had been struggling for many years at the school she attended in Japan. As a person with dyslexia, she felt that moving to the U.S. was the only way for her to graduate from high school.
Once a failing student, Evelyn is now thriving in a career she is passionate about. This became possible because of her move to America, where dyslexia is more widely recognized and accepted. It allowed her to receive an education that accommodated her learning differences. She's proof that assistive technology and accommodations can empower people with different learning styles.
Dyslexia — a neurological difference caused by variations in brain wiring — is known for making reading and writing more challenging. There is a wide spectrum of dyslexia and how different dyslexic brains work.
However, not enough attention is given to the remarkable strengths of dyslexic thinking. There are countless individuals that have dyslexia including inventors, scholars, and other people of notable success. It's time for society to start to understand the success that dyslexic thinking can bring to the world.
Attending this presentation, attendees will learn about …
- Evelyn's dyslexia story, which includes a comparison of her schooling experiences in both countries.
- Why companies are choosing to hire neurodivergent individuals
- A dyslexia-friendly style guide based on research and articles, which helps make reading easier for everyone.
Presenter Bio:
Evelyn Sakura Brokering, a Senior User Experience/User Interface Designer at Gap Inc., specializes in UX localization, working closely with both Gap Inc.'s U.S. headquarters and its Japanese operations. She uses her dyslexic thinking to create design solutions.
Evelyn's passion for UX design was ignited by the transformative power of assistive technology, particularly text-to-speech, which played a pivotal role in her own educational journey. While her dyslexic thinking presented challenges during her schooling in Japan, she now attributes her accomplishments in this creative field of UX design to her unique cognitive skills and visual intelligence.
Evelyn's advocacy for neurodiversity extends beyond her professional endeavors. She is an active voice in the neurodiversity community, sharing her knowledge and experiences with organizations.
Her personal story, coupled with her unwavering commitment to accessibility, serves as a powerful reminder that those with dyslexia are just as capable in every sense, and at times even at an advantage because of the pros of dyslexic thinking. Being accommodative and using technology in the proper ways can unlock the full potential of every individual.
