Abstract

As Facebook and Twitter have dominated news headlines with a series of high-profile debacles, an international, grassroots movement has quietly been building momentum. The Federated Universe - or Fediverse - offers social media alternatives with an emphasis on privacy, transparency, open source code, and local control. Using the ActivityPub protocol as a unifying standard, these applications are able to communicate across separate “instances” and even across separate applications.

The Fediverse offers a new world of possibilities for both users and developers, and Elixir is a natural fit for this world. (Spoiler alert - Jose Valim is there!) Join us for a journey into the Fediverse as we learn firsthand what makes it special, what makes it challenging, and where it might grow from here.

Abby Jones is a senior software engineer at Mutual of Omaha. She’s been at Mutual for 6 years, focusing largely on front end development, CI/CD, and AWS. She began learning Elixir at the beginning of 2022 and introduced it as a proof of concept at Mutual in the spring. As a former teacher and a would-be novelist, Abby is passionate about learning, teaching, and writing expressive code that tells a story. She kind of likes dogs.
