May 29 Wilkes-Barre City Council meeting

Details

Fellow freethinkers,

Consider joining Co-organizer and Spokesperson Justin Vacula at the May 29, 2014 Wilkes-Barre City Council meeting at to object to discriminatory treatment at the hands of city officials related to the unprominent display of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) banner on Public Square during the National Day of Prayer event Circle the Square With Prayer. See Justin's coverage of the FFRF banner controversy here (http://justinvacula.com/category/2014-ffrf-banner/) for more information.

Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting to, if you choose, sign forms reserving time during the public comment section to offer your thoughts to council. If you arrive late -- unable to complete the speaking form prior to the meeting -- council may not allow you to speak during the public comment section. You have five minutes to speak. I highly encourage you to prewrite your speech and practice so that you can maximize your use of the allotted five minutes.

Consider also using some or all of your time in the public comment section to rebuke the recurring government-led Judeo-Christian prayer during City Council meetings.

Consider also bringing recording devices. Recording during council meetings is legal. Consider also remaining seated, refusing to bow your head, during the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer portions of the council meeting.

City Council chambers are on the top floor of city hall. Use the elevator or walk up stairs, pass the Mayor's Office, and enter council chambers on the left side far end of the hall.

The meeting starts at 6:00PM, but the event time is listed as 5:45PM to allow for early entry and reserving time during the public comment section of the meeting. Council meetings typically span one to two hours.

Interested members, after the city council meeting, are also invited for food/drinks at a place to be determined.

Feel free to post comments/questions.
