Bad to the Bone: Photographing Death Valley

Wondering what to do over Thanksgiving? Join me for a fantastic workshop of photographing Death Valley when it's actually pleasant weather. Warm, (not boiling hot) days and cool nights.

You’ll experience giant sand dunes and strangely looking salt flats, amazing vistas and geological formations, but there is more to Death Valley than just the landscape. We’ll also explore and photograph lesser known parts of Death Valley including a ghost town with bizarre outdoor sculptures, the surreal Scotty's Castle in the middle of an oasis and if we’re lucky maybe a bleached cow skull. We will spend our time shooting on location for three full days – no boring lectures in this workshop. Dinners may be in shared company or on your own, but do plan to share Thanksgiving dinner as a group.

This workshop will be limited to six participants, to foster close collaboration and sharing and ensure everyone receives one on one attention.

Besides opportunities to capture grand landscapes and close-up details, there will also be instruction on creating compelling travel portraits and how to use off-camera flash creatively. Emphasis is on seeing and artistic exploration rather than how to fix it later in Photoshop.

You should book your accommodations as soon as possible. A variety of options are available in various price ranges including camping (see below). I will be driving down on Wednesday and staying at the Motel 6 in Beatty, Nevada, about an hour’s drive from the center of DV at Furnace Creek. (I am open to sharing with a woman to help keep expenses down as well as carpooling.)

A deposit of $75 will hold your spot. The balance is due no later than November 14th. If you prefer to pay by check, email me and I'll give you a mailing address. You’ll receive an email confirmation with itinerary and details. Accommodations are not included. Driving time from the Bay Area is approximately 9 hours without holiday traffic. You can also fly into Las Vegas, rent a car and be there in 2.5 hours.

Camping is available at Furnace Creek, Texas Springs and other campgrounds. Lodging is available at Stovepipe Wells Motel, Furnace Creek Ranch and Furnace Creek Resort and Panamint Springs Resort. Reservations are strongly recommended. Additional lodging is available outside of the park in small towns such as Beatty, NV (Closest to the northern park entrance), Death Valley Junction, Shosone, Lone Pine and Ridgecrest.
