Welcome to learn and discuss about open city decision-making data!
City of Helsinki will have a new governance and organizational structure 1st June 2017. There are several IT systems to support city governance and administration. One of the most relevant systems is the decision-making system. All the decisions concerning the city are prepared through an IT system called Ahjo, which has thousands of users from city councillors to officials.
The city has been publishing its decisions online on their web site for many years but since 2013, the public content of the decisions have also been available as open data via Open Ahjo API (http://www.hri.fi/en/dataset/helsingin-kaupungin-asianhallintajarjestelma-ahjon-rajapinta). The Open API makes it possible to request machine-readable and up-to-date decision-making data from the Ahjo system regarding the City Council, City Board, other boards and civil servants.
The Open Ahjo API is a very unique case on a global level. City of Helsinki has shared its source codes and experiences openly on international and national levels. In the near future, there will be more similar open APIs available as the cities of Vantaa, Espoo and Oulu are preparing to release their decision-making data as open data.
Developers have created several apps that utilise this open decision-making data in order to help citizens, media and civil servants to follow up on the decision-making process of Helsinki. One of these apps is the Päätökset-service (https://dev.hel.fi/paatokset/), which was created by a code fellow of Helsinki. This web application provides an user-friendly way to browse and find the issues and decisions you are interested in from decision-makers, themes, districts or keywords.
At this Hel<3Dev meetup you will hear about how the new governance and administration system of Helsinki will affect the Open Ahjo API and you will also have a chance to re-develop the Päätökset-service together with experts and the community.
