Details

Our second 'Sydney Computational Biologists' meetup will present a talk from Dr Graham Johnson (http://www.grahamjlab.org/), who is visiting from UCSF, USA. The talk will take place in the John Shine room, level 6 of the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, 370 Victoria St, Darlinghurst (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?client=safari&oe=UTF-8&q=370+Victoria+St,+Darlinghurst&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=370+Victoria+St,+Darlinghurst+New+South+Wales+2010&gl=au&ll=-33.878878,151.221292&spn=0.022143,0.046756&t=m&z=16&vpsrc=0&iwloc=A) - next to the Garvan Institute for Medical Research. Afterwards, drinks at the nearby Darlo Bar (http://darlobar.com.au).

Graham Johnson (UCSF, USA) (http://www.grahamjlab.org/)

Graham will talk about his work developing tools to generate, simulate, and visualise molecular models of cellular processes on the mesoscale - that is, the scale between molecules and what can be normally observed by electron microscopy - the scale of large macromolecular assemblies, where current experimental methods are limited. Graham began his career as a Certified Medical Illustrator, specialising in molecular and cellular biology since graduating from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1997. He illustrated both editions of the textbook Cell Biology by Pollard & Earnshaw as a coauthor, and has created thousands of scientific visuals ranging from journal covers to pedagogic animations and game designs. Graham currently lives in San Francisco, CA and works at UCSF as a qb3@UCSF Faculty Fellow. He completed his PhD in the Molecular Graphics Lab at Scripps, and now continues similar work, collaborating with programmers to develop software that can interoperate the computational tools of science and art. Graham gives lectures on both molecular graphics and protein docking to structural biology/biophysics graduate students, medical illustrators, and high school students. To find out more about his work, check out his YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/grahamj21).

Want even more inspiring biological animations? The following evening (7pm, 30 May), Graham will be giving a more outreach-focused talk together with Drew Berry (http://www.wehi.edu.au/education/wehitv/about_wehi-tv) at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, as part of VIVID - for details see http://vizbi.org/VIZBIplus/ .
