Jul 10-12 - Canoe & Camping along the River Wye 1

Details

It's the time of year when splashing about on the water seems the perfect way to cool down, assuming we are having a hot summer, and the river beckons every man and woman to relax in the peace of the flowing water and birdlife.....This might, however, get occasionally disrupted by the splashing and capsizing canoes and chatter and drinking around the campfire.

The River Wye is renowned for its leisurely canoeing and is truly a majestic river, full of wildlife and colour. The canoe trips on the River Wye, between Hereford and south of Monmouth, are regarded by many as being one of the most picturesque river sections in the UK.

Our journey along the River Wye will be via a flotilla of canoes from Hereford to Ross-on-Wye (about 28 miles) over 2 days and camping halfway.

Accommodation

We will be staying in a campsite beside the river where campfires are permitted and showers are available. We will also be able to walk into Ross on Wye where we have some good dining venues on a Saturday night.

There is access to showers at this campsite. However, the facilities are very basic!

We are very close to a local venue and will take our cooked breakfast indoors on both mornings and possibly dinner on Saturday.

Tents will be provided, these are generally 8 and 10 person tents, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. But please advise in advance.

Canoes
The canoes will be open Canadian style canoes suitable for three persons per canoe. Life jackets will be supplied and you will be required to wear them at all times on the water. Helmets are available if required, however, there is little or no need for these to be worn by adults.

Watertight storage drums will be available on each boat to store valuables, lunch etc.

No experience is needed at all. As long as you are capable of paddling for about 4-5 hours over the course of each day. Full instruction and a safety briefing will be given prior to departure.

The canoeing will be self-guided and not by the operator.

This year we will be venturing further down the river, using a different campsite which is within walking distance of Ross on Wye and two new breakfast and dinner venues.

GETTING THERE

AAA events start and end at the accommodation venue so you will need to arrange your own transport to and from the accommodation.

Members have been organising lift shares within the Meetup group for a long time and AAA have also assisted members to organise getting to the destination.

If you want to lift share we recommend that you post a message on the Meetup “Discussion” page that is specific to this event.

AAA takes no responsibility for the lift shares and does not get involved with these private arrangements between members.

Please do not contact people regarding lifts on the “Conversation” thread below as this generates spam for all participants of the event.

The drive to Symonds Yat boatyard is 15 mins from the campsite where we will be equipped with life vests etc and receive a briefing before departing for Hereford.

After the briefing, we will be transferred with the canoes to Hoerwithy from where we will enter the river and commence our days paddling downs stream.

After a day enjoying the beauty of the river and surrounding countryside and having stopped for a picnic we will conclude the day close to the town of Ross on Wye.

Sunday

Dismantle some tents prior to continuing our journey by canoe to Symonds Yat.

Depart for a short paddle to our breakfast venue (as seen below) by the river for a cooked breakfast.
