What are the religious roots of the attack on The U.S. Capitol?

The Atlantic termed it "A Christian Insurrection" -- observing that "Many of those who mobbed the Capitol... claimed to be enacting God's Will. The name of God was everywhere during Wednesday's inssurection against the American government."

The New York Times wrote about "How White Evangelical Christians Fused With Trump Extremism," noting that "A potent mix of grievance and religious fervor has turbocharged the support among Trump loyalists, many of whom describe themselves as participants in a kind of holy war."

What are the ideological or spiritual links connecting the influential Evangelical Christian movement with white supremacist militias and apocalyptic conspiracy theories such as QAnon? And what are appropriate (and effective?) Humanist responses for these fraught times?
