Darwin Day: A Declaration of Interdependence

Details

In February, science enthusiasts, humanists and liberal religious groups sometimes celebrate the birthday Charles Darwin to commemorate and reflect on the legacy of his incredible discovery and what it means to our world.

At our special Freethinker Forum for Darwin Day, we'll be treated to a video presentation by Rev. Dr. David Breeden, Senior Minister of First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, a Humanist UU community originally founded in the late 1800s by a group of people who wanted to read and understand Darwin's work. David asks us to consider how "Darwin's dangerous idea" interrupted what Western societies had long believed about "the great chain of being," and how evolution by natural selection continues to both challenge and inspire us.

Darwin's discovery paved the way for a new understanding of what some of might call a sacred or meaningful connection to the natural universe, embodied in the 7th UU Principle: "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part." For those less inclined to such formulations, evolution is nonetheless a vital and profound truth about our lives and our world.

In our current difficult time -- beset by a global pandemic and a looming climate crisis -- perhaps it is more relevant than ever.

All are welcome -- join us for a lively discussion where a diversity of views are welcome and respected!
