Freethinker Forum: Revisiting Emergence

Details

This month we'll revisit the intriguing topic of EMERGENCE, a key aspect our universe driving complexity and creativity.

The cross-disciplinary science and philosophy of Emergence (emergent properties) attempts to describe how complex patterns of organization and evolution arise from simpler components — examples include galaxies, snowflakes, and life itself.

Emergence gives rise to chemistry from physics, psychology from biology, and consciousness from organic matter. A wondrous but partly mysterious feature of our universe, some scientists, philosophers and theologians alike think Emergence may be the key to reconciling science and religion.

In Unitarian Universalist circles, emergence is significant for its connection to ideas about Humanism -- but also religious naturalism, pantheism, and process theology. But perhaps most importantly, Emergence may be the key to understanding how/why the universe is creative without a creator.
