Zoom: Jeremiah ch.25-26

Today we will be discussing Jeremiah, chapters 23-24.

Up to this point Jeremiah has been proclaiming God's declaration that He will bring disaster upon the royal city, Jerusalem, and all that is under its dominion, because of the stubbornly sinful lives of its leaders and people. For those who submit to the judgement of God there is hope of a promised return from its unrelenting disaster—a renewal of the kingdom which will vastly transcend it's former glory; marked by a communal resolution to singularly seek, find, and convey the heart of YHWH. Nevertheless, Jerusalem has pridefully scoffed at and even violently retaliated to Jeremiah's preaching, insisting that she is invulnerable to such evils as God has promised to come upon her because of pretentious religiosity instead of loyalty to her Lord.

Now, the day has indeed come when Nebuchadnezzar did arrive and besiege the walls of Jerusalem. Though the current king, Zedekiah sought for a new hope for Jerusalem's rescue from Nebuchadnezzar's destruction, Jeremiah relays to Zedekiah that the only hope of salvation is to surrender his life to the Lord's servant. Just as the Lord had warned the Kings of Judah before him, Shallum, Jehoiakim, and Coniah, who refused to repent, so now God has Jeremiah repeat those prophesies in the ears of Zedekiah, showing that the impending destruction is a result of their unrighteous refusal to obey the Lord's salvation. What will Zedekiah do?

In chapters 23-24 Jeremiah will speak of the hope of a Righteous King who will restore the Kingdom and lead a righteous people who trust in Him. But what will become of those who refuse to obey God's declaration of hope and instead trust in themselves, that they are righteous?
