A People’s History and the Stories Power Tried to Erase

Details
For our next Banned & Burned Book Club, we’re turning the page with a cornerstone work that dares to ask: Whose history gets told? (All books are at Abi's so consider supporting us by purchasing them here)
📕 A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn will be our primary text. This landmark book rewrites American history from the ground up, amplifying the voices of workers, women, Black Americans, Indigenous people, and all those who have too often been left out of the official record. It’s not just a book, it’s a challenge to think critically, speak boldly, and reimagine what patriotism can mean.
Optional, but powerful, companion reads:
📘 The Other Civil War: Slavery and Struggle in Civil War America: A deep dive into the class conflicts and resistance movements that surged beneath the more familiar North vs. South narrative. A reminder that history is never as simple as it seems.
📗 A Young People’s History of the United States: A more accessible version, ideal for younger readers, or anyone looking to engage with big ideas in plainspoken language. Because the truth shouldn’t come with an age requirement.
These books continue our mission: to read what others fear, to question what we’re told, and to remember that banned books are often banned because they tell the truth too clearly for comfort.
