Details

Our Featured presenters this month are Matty and Jarman from Men Imitating Machines.

M.I.M. have been performing in Australia and Europe for more than 10 years, playing 100% live electronic sounds built with the foundations of bass heavy beats, huge riffs and infectious electro vibes. They are also keen educators and have hosted many workshops and seminars on live electronic music since 2013.

Jarman (M.I.M bass and guitar) is a featured artist at Industrial Radio - home of the MIDI bass and MIDI guitar and moderates the Industrial Radio Users Group. He also regularly helps with Beta testing of the MIDI guitar and bass technology.

Matty (M.I.M drums) runs Bitnormal Records - a label dedicated to live electronic music acts and Tommy Gunn (M.I.M's sound, lighting and visual guru) is a force behind their visual creative ideas and DIY merch and art projects.

Men Imitating Machines use a MIDI guitar, MIDI bass guitar and MIDI drums to play electronic music on the fly using Ableton Live. Matty and Jarman have never used any of the clip or loop functionality in Ableton, instead choosing to develop custom MIDI management devices. They use Max for Live customised devices as well as custom coded external applications that sit outside of Ableton Live but assist workflow and transitions during performance. M.I.M will explain their system of free flow performance that allows spontaneous changes of tempo with linked MIDI controlled visuals following the form of the music.

Our once a month production meetup is a place where you can meet like-minded producers, discuss production techniques and listen to other musicians talk about their own creative processes.

Entry is free, and we welcome all attendees no matter what level of experience you have with Ableton Live. The user group is a chance to meet with a diverse range of producers, share knowledge, get feedback, meet and hang out with other like-minded enthusiasts.

We're extremely grateful to have a partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne's "The Channel", who allow us to use of their amazing space, which is part of the Hamer Hall complex on the Yarra River, just a couple of minutes walk from Flinders Street Station in the CBD.
