Understanding Mormonism- ministering to our LDS friends

Mormonism, Latter Day Saints. Who are they? Are they Christian as they claim? Do they believe in the same Jesus as Christians do? They have such a clean, appealling, family oriented position but, what about the rest of their beliefs? Things like secret temple worshipping, undergarments, 3 levels of heaven, poligamy and more.
To answer these questions and to have a better understanding of the LDS faith, we will be scheduling the viewing of a DVD by former temple Morman Brad Melton. We will schedule this based on interest and can decide what part of town to have this meet up. We will also be looking for a location.
If interested, please reply and rsvp.

I wish to apologize to everyone who attended. Am sorry we were not better preparred and had the tv problems. I realize most of you drove a considerable distance and took time out of your Sunday for this and I was not able to show what I was supposed to. We will make every effort to be better preparred and checked out in the future. Please accept my apology.

Mary Joy and others. We appreciate your input. I wish to emphasize that this is not a 'beat up on Mormons" meet up. It is to provide a better understanding of their faith which may allow us to be more effective in ministering to them. I have many LDS friends and I love and respect them all. They have many really good qualities- pro life, pro family, clean living, etc. In fact, IMO, they honor some parts of scripture better than Christians do- one example is how they honor the sabbath. We must be equipped and to do this with gentleness and with respect (1 Peter 3:15).
If you have any LDS liturature or anything comparing the 2 faiths, you are welcome to bring it along to share. there will be much discussion. Greg has informed he that he was part of the LDS church at one time and we hope he can share his experiences as well.
    Tell your friends.
What we all really want is the truth, correct? That is the goal.

Steve, if you interpreted my posting as beating up on Mormons you are sadly mistaken.

Mary Joy, you are misinterpeting me, was not commenting particularly on your post. Simply letting all who read to remind them the purpose of the meet up. Sorry if you took a post wrong, it was not intended.

I am really looking forward to our upcoming meeting. Thelma "Granny" Geer grew up mormon and she wrote a book years ago entitled;... "Mormonism, Momma & Me." She stated that she always felt loved and she loved her Momma dearly. Thelma goes on to disclose what she knew of the Mormons and how she found the truth by reading God's Word for herself. She contrasts important tenets of the Mormon faith with biblical truth. I am expecting Brad Melton's position in the temple to bring more to light than not.

Interesting comments Cindi and Todd. Brads dvd is comprehensive and uses direct book of Mormon references clearly showing the differences between the 2 faiths
Without getting too far ahead of ourselves-
There are distinct differences between Biblical doctrine (Christianity) and the LDS faith (Mormonism).
A few critical examples to ponder-
    * Christians believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. LDS doctrine does not.
    * Christains believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of God. People of the LDS faith do not. They believe it is full of mistakes & that their supplement, the book of Mormon, has higher authority than the Bible does.
    * Christians believe that the only way to salvation is through the free gift of grace through Jesus Christ, not by works. Our LDS friends, according to their doctrine, do not.
*Christians believe that Jesus Christ is God's only son. Our LDs friends do not.
We can study these facts & conclude what Christainity is & what it is not.

I am a little skeptical of this former Morman. Not sure we will get the truth from him as he may have an axe to grind. Just a suggestion perhaps you should have a current member or a missionary who can relate the truth about Mormonism. There are so many negative untruths that people spread. I have a little knowledge since one of my family branches is Morman. According to my cousin they believe in God the Eternal Father, his son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
Some people try to portray them as non Christians which is complete nonsense.
I am quite interested in learning all about other religions and hope this is just the beginning. Would like to know more about Jehovah Witness, Buddhism, etc. I know there are many and with many different beliefs but what it boils down to is whatever your beliefs are just living a good life, being true to yourself and following your heart, loving all people no matter what their beliefs, ethnicity, race, color, sexual orientation, etc.

$indi, the reason we're going to look @ this particular DVD is because Brad Melton is a former temple Mormon, which means he was at a very high level within Mormonism, much higher than the average Mormon. He's actually a great resource to start with as he has what we would call, "insider information." Of course he's only one resource, but he's a great place to begin to understand Mormonism, and what they truly believe. Remember, just because someone says they believe in Jesus, that isn't enough. Even the Devil (Satan) and his Demons believe in Jesus.

The real question is 'what' do we believe about Him. Is he truly God incarnate, or simply a man? This is the point of our meetup, as these are critical differences, and the differences that hinge on what a true Christian is, and is not.

To your point of what 'it all boils down to, Jesus summed it up best... "Love The Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind." This is truly what it all hangs on.

We now have a location and are working on 4 possibilities for the date and time-
It will be later this month-
    Either
    * one of the last 2 Sunday afternoons/evenings
*or one of the last 2 Monday eves

The meet up will probably end up in 2 parts so, for this first session, we will have it for 60-90 minutes. There will be much time allowed for questions and discussion. There are rest rooms near by and we can bring or furnish snacks.

Please let us know which of these dates are best for you. Greg, Todd and myself are flexible and should be able to accomodate any of the above listed times.

    thanks!

Hi everyone! We can rent a meeting room at one of the library branches, the cost is $5/hr for the entire group so it would be very inexpensive. My suggestion would be Mesquite Library that is pretty centrally located (PV mall area).
Also Acacia Library could be a possibility? It is Cave Creek and Dunlap. I actually called this branch and was informed that they do have availibility on Saturdays to reserve the meeting room. They also have a TV but we will need to bring a DVD player (I have a small one that I can bring). The reservation should be made a few weeks in advance to ensure the availibility. I will also call the Mesquite branch and post the updates later :-)
