Reimagining Social Media. What makes social media social?

Details

What makes social media social?

Is it Following people on Instagram? Is it Liking and Retweeting tweets on Twitter? Is it having a Friends list on Facebook? Is it the ability to Direct Message each other? Or, is it something else entirely?

Defining the social in social media, even if it is for ourselves, will allow us to dig deeper into how we can reimagine existing social media platforms so they align with what we value as social beings, as well as envision new forms of social media platforms that can enrich our social lives.

Join us on Sunday, March 21 at 2:00PM EST to reimagine the social in social media and critically examine our digital social lives in the 21st century.

There are no right or wrong answers. All opinions are welcomed and respected.

We created this space for like-minded individuals to come together and talk about all things life-tech balance, digital well-being, and how we can thrive in our digitally-caffeinated world.

*** Please read the following guidelines for a civil discussion to ensure a great learning environment for everyone in attendance. ***

Guidelines for a Civil Discussion
(Taken from United States Court website: https://www.uscourts.gov/)

  1. Wait to be recognized by the moderator before speaking.
  2. Don’t interrupt or talk over someone else who is speaking.
  3. Listen for content in the statements of others, even if you disagree.
  4. Don’t engage in side conversations that distract from the speaker who has the floor.
  5. Don’t assume that you know what someone else means. Ask questions that help you understand perspectives different from your own.
  6. Follow the direction of the discussion. Don’t repeat what has already been said.
  7. Relate your comments to those of previous speakers.
  8. Don’t get personal. No demeaning or inappropriate comments, facial expressions, or gestures.
  9. Differentiate between facts and opinions. Both are valid when expressed appropriately.
  10. Listen more than you speak.

RSVP closes 24 hours before the event start time.
