Bringing Access to the Next Election

How do we bring disability and accessibility into the political conversation for the ‘22 midterm elections?

In 2020 virtually every political campaign ran a website that fell short of being accessible. Worse still, very few of the candidates had platforms that supported issues that would serve the disability community. How would we go about changing this in time for the ‘22 midterms?

Join Access + Equity as we host a panel that includes accessibility leaders Sheri Byrne-Haber and Claudio Luis Vera as well as a candidate for a mayoral election and his campaign manager. We’ll discuss a proposed plan for getting candidates’ attention and (hopefully) getting them to build disability-friendly campaign sites and support disability-related issues.

Sheri Byrne-Haber -
Arguably the most outspoken person in accessibility, Sheri is a prolific blogger on the subject of accessibility and disability rights. She is also architects and manages the accessibility programs for VMWare.

Ty Penserga -
As the city’s current Commissioner, Ty has been active in supporting accessibility initiatives for the City of Boynton Beach. Ty is in the early stages of his candidacy for mayor in the ‘22 elections.

Claudio Luis Vera -
Claudio is a community leader and accessibility advocate with a 30-year background in design and technology. Starting soon, he will be starting a new position as Head of Strategy for Stark Labs, a software company that builds integrated accessibility tools for designers.

Beth Wagmeister -
As lead of the WAG Group, Beth coaches and advises companies in their accessibility practices. She also works as an ally of the Deaf community, promoting accessible meeting practices and the use of American Sign Language.
