Details

Event Date and Location

The monthly accessibility meet-up for Accessibility DC is at Blackboard here in Washington, DC. The event will be on August 2, 2018, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Event registration will close at noon on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, so Blackboard has time to inform building security who is going to attend. You will not be let into the building if you are not on the list.

Talk Information

At this month’s Accessibility DC meetup Aaron Gustafson who is a Web Standards and Accessibility Advocate for Microsoft will be speakng remotely about voice-based interactions with your computer.

Description

Over time, your users will become more accustomed to and reliant on voice-based interactions with their computers and, thereby, the web. Enabling them to complete critical tasks without a visual user interface will be crucial for the long-term success of your website. If you can't make it you should watch Aaron's Inclusive Design 24 (ID 24) talk on the same subject from the fall of 2017.

Bio

As would be expected from a former manager of the Web Standards Project, Aaron Gustafson is passionate about web standards and accessibility. He’s been working on the Web for over two decades now and is a web standards advocate at Microsoft. In addition to working closely with the Edge team, Aaron works with partners on Progressive Web Apps, with a focus on cross-platform compatibility. He penned the seminal book on progressive enhancement, Adaptive Web Design, and has been known to have some opinions, many of which you can read at aaron-gustafson.com. Here is Aaron's longer bio.

Schedule

Below is a breakdown of the schedule and how the meeting will unfold. Would greatly appreciate it if you can make sure you are on time so we can get started on time.

6:30 PM - 6:45 PM - Welcome everyone.
6:45 PM - 8:30 PM - Aaron Gustafson's talk.
8:30 PM - 9:00 PM - We will clean-up and get ready to head out possibly for a bit more to eat and drink.

Talk Ideas

We are always looking for people or even groups to lead a talk or presentation about anything accessibility related for the group. Please contact info@accessibilitydc.org with any discussion ideas you would be willing to do.

Future Events

In the next year or so we will be having more hands-on-demos on how to use and test with screen readers. The talks will be broken into three desktop talk on JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver. Along with two discussions on mobile and tablet screen reader talks on VoiceOver and TalkBack. We will be asking those with the screen reader or device to bring theirs to the event so you and others can get a few hands-on-demos so you can listen and then practice what you learned.

Thanks,
