The Art of the Alt Tag

Details
Alternative text tags enable nonvisual users to access visual content on websites, apps, software and e-documents. They also assist users with certain types of cognitive disabilities in understanding information presented in graphics, photos and illustrations. But if you’ve crafted alt tags, you understand the “push and pull” of providing the right amount, and type, of information in this highly useful accessibility tool.
This MeetUp gives you/your team the opportunity to examine the many facets, and uses for alt tags, while exploring options for developing solid best practices, applicable to your organization and/or products.
Lead by Lynn Wehrman, WeCo’s Founder/President, who also heads the company’s Public Relations Team and former State of MN Accessible Communications Specialist who pioneered the alternative text tag processes applied in the early days of MnDOT’s digital accessibility work.
Other guest contributors to be announced.
We will cover:
- A quick intro to alt tag, their purpose, and how they are most often applied, for ATC MeetUp newbies.
- Short and long description alt tags: the difference, and some practical application guidance.
- Alt tag puzzles: how to tag unusual visual aspects of projects.
- When alt tags work and when they don’t, and what you might do to address accessibility when they don’t.
- What the WCAG says about alternative text tags, and why WeCo goes beyond the basic requirements.
This event is available through Zoom only. Onsite participation is not available
