Accessibility with Divi - MEGA MEETUP! (Special Time, Special Format)

Details

*** NOTE: Special time for this Meetup: 3:00 pm Pacific Time on Thursday, March 24, 2022 ***

Accessibility Web + WordPress joins forces with several Divi Meetups to demonstrate basic ways to make your Divi website accessible.

-- The Good, the Bad, and the Easy –
Noted WordPress accessibility specialist Sumner M. Davenport joins greater Los Angeles-area web developer Ron Amick to shine some light on Accessibility on a Divi website and the quest to make web pages available and functional for all potential visitors, including those with disabilities.

With just a little bit of effort, your Divi WordPress website can be user-friendly to the over 25% of all possible users who currently have a disability.

Sumner and Ron will spotlight problem areas as well as accessibility solutions on Divi sites.

Their presentation will include:
• The increased value of an Accessible Divi site
• Common Divi Accessibility errors
• What NOT to do
• Divi Accessibility plugin uses and limitations
• Examples of easy manual fixes you can implement right away

Sumner Davenport and Ron Amick both hold lifetime Divi licenses.

Sumner Davenport specializes in Web Accessibility for WordPress websites. For over 14 years, she has presented on topics related to Accessibility for WordPress as well as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). She has spoken at Small Business conferences, WordPress groups of all kinds, and has served as co-organizer, speaker and wrangler for local WordCamps. She has presented at TechAccessOK workshops, at the John Slatin AccessU conference, and at the first ever WordPress Accessibility Day -- all by invitation. She was on the organizing team of A Future Date 2020, an Accessibility Technology event. Sumner has participated in the Knowbility Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR) 2020 & 2021, with the team she mentored winning second place. She is currently a mentor to USA and UK teams for Accessibility Next Generation. She is a member of International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) and Internet Society Accessibility Special Interest Group.

Ron Amick is the product of an engineer father and painter mother, and spent much of his youth making short films and video, then worked in the Hollywood movie machine long enough to find his big break at Disney, where he made no films but found a new love in web development. A couple decades and several creative agencies later, he handcrafts web and mobile products and content for a variety of clients, mostly in the entertainment industry, ever questing for more knowledge and new skills. “Life is a journey,” says Amick, “and I am a journeyman.” He co-founded two Accessibility-focused Meetup Groups and co-organized WordCamp Santa Clarita Valley 2019, emceed and moderated two other WordCamps in 2020, and was a speaker at WordCamp Santa Clarita Valley 2021.

Who should attend?

Our meetup is inclusive. This event is for people who love WordPress and Accessibility and want to share their knowledge, experience, and to meet other WordPress users in the area. Both experienced and beginner WordPress designers and developers are encouraged to attend and participate.

We do have a few rules.
In line with the mission of WordPress, our meetup was established using 4 of the 5 Good Faith Rules from Make WordPress (see our website: https://wa11ywp.org/meetup-4-good-faith-rules/).
Also please check our Code of Conduct (https://wa11ywp.org/meetup-code-of-conduct/).
We’re a friendly bunch, always striving to offer a nurturing, encouraging environment where we can all talk and learn Web Accessibility while expanding our knowledge of WordPress.

NO sales pitches of products or services to the group, please.

ALSO: No legal discussion or advice please, unless you are a practicing civil rights or disability rights attorney and not just someone playing one on YouTube . . .

NOTE: Please update your RSVP if you later find that you cannot attend.

The International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) has pre-approved Accessibility Web + WordPress educational events for Continuing Accessibility Education Credits (CAECs) for maintaining your certification with the IAAP.

We are committed to making this Meetup fully accessible, and live captions will be available through the Closed Captioning setting in the Zoom window. For more details, please refer to Zoom’s Closed Captioning tutorial: (https://bit.ly/3CuALx0)

We will be recording this presentation in Zoom. If the recording is successful, it may be provided after the meeting for access after the necessary accessibility has been added.

** A very special thank you to Sumner M. Davenport & Assoc. LLC for sponsoring the Zoom video conferencing services and live captioning for this Meetup. **
