Memorial Day - Reading of the Names / Mackworth Island Walk

Details
What are you doing to commemorate Memorial Day?
Please feel free to join for a:
* Reflection upon lives lost
* Walk around Mackworth Island
- Every year I go to Martin’s Point (northern tip of Portland) to the commemorative plaque for the USS Reuban James, the first Navy Ship sunk by hostile fire – torpedoed by a German submarine near Iceland before Pearl Harbor on October 31, 1941 - before the United States had officially joined the war now known as World War II.
- The sinking of the USS Reuban James resulted in the deaths of 115 of 160 crew members who are commemorated at the Memorial.
- There is a second monument to all Maine residents lost during WWII,
- Each year I observe Memorial Day by going to the monument and read the names aloud of the Maine sailors who lost their lives. I will be doing this again this year. I thought that if others found this to be a meaningful way to commemorate Memorial Day and would like to join, then I would welcome the company. We can divide up the reading of the names for those who desire to take part.
- After a respectful amount of time for reflection, those who would like to continue their experience, there will be an optional walk around Mackworth Island. Some will walk across the bridge from Martins Point to the Falmouth peninsula and then Mackworth Island. There is also the option to drive and park directly at the Mackworth Island trailhead.
