Cheddar Gorge is England’s largest gorge, stretching for three miles, with cliffs rising nearly 400 feet (122 meters) high. It was formed roughly 1.2 million years ago during the last Ice Age, carved out by melting glaciers and ancient river. In 1903, the oldest, almost complete human skeleton in Britain, the 10,000 year old "Cheddar Man" was discovered in Gough’s Cave.

We are heading to the birthplace of Cheddar cheese! Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company still matures its cheese inside these caves today - you can even purchase some to take home.

We’ll be tackling a route offering breathtaking, panoramic views of the Gorge. Look out for the herd of feral goats that live on the cliffs! They help maintain the landscape, alongside rare Soay sheep. J.R.R. Tolkien visited here on his honeymoon and cited the caves as the inspiration for Helm’s Deep in The Lord of the Rings.
