Hastings is a town in Sussex, England, that is famous for the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William, duke of Normandy, defeated Harold II of England and became the king of England. Hastings was also a Saxon settlement before the Norman invasion, and had a castle that was later rebuilt by William. Hastings began as a Saxon settlement. It was called Haesta ingas, which means Haestaβs people. By the 10th century, Hastings had grown into a little market town. It even had its own mint.
