π Winchester was the ancient capital of England. In 871 AD Alfred was crowned King of Wessex and established Winchester as his capital. It then remained the capital and the most important city in England until the 11th century and the arrival of William the Conqueror.
β’ Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest in Europe, with the greatest length and longest nave.
β’ Jane Austen, one of Englandβs greatest novelists, is also buried at the Cathedral in 1817 (aged 41 )
β’ Ruins of Wolvesey Castle: palace of the Bishops of Winchester was built between 1130 - 71.
β’ The Great Hall of Winchester Castle is the legendary place of the round table and where King Arthur and his Knights congregated - a replica table from the 13th century still hangs there. The Great Hall is all that remains of the medieval castle originally constructed for William the Conqueror in 1067.
