From Ego to Essence: An Exploration of the Default Mode Network, Identity, and Mystical Experience

Today’s mystics walk with the same wonder as those before them—but now with neuroscience to broaden insights once known only by intuition and revelation.

Who do you think you are?
Join us for an integrative introduction to the Default Mode Network (DMN)—a core brain system involved in self-referential thought, autobiographical memory, and identity construction. Often referred to in neuroscience literature as the 'neural correlate of the ego', the Default Mode Network plays a central role in how we experience ourselves as distinct, continuous beings.

Yet when Default Mode Network activity quiets or changes—through meditation, music, psychedelics, or spontaneous mystical experience—many report a shift into spacious awareness, loss of self-boundaries, and a sense of connection with something transcendent.

This session combines a review of scientific literature with experiential practice to explore:
• How the Default Mode Network constructs personal identity and narrative continuity
• What neuroscience reveals about mystical states of unity and timelessness
• How contemplative practices can modulate DMN activity and invite direct experience beyond self-reference

What we'll cover:
• A brief review of current literature on the DMN and its role in ego function and spiritual experience
• A contemplative music practice: “Where is the music happening?” — exploring absorption in sense perception
• A poetic meditation: “Dropping the Story” — inviting DMN quieting and open awareness
• An opportunity for sharing experiences and ideas
• Meeting close

This session invites those drawn to the mystery of consciousness and the architecture of small 's' selfhood. If you’ve ever wondered how the brain constructs identity—or what happens when that construction dissolves—this is a space to explore, reflect, and experience. Come with an open mind, a contemplative spirit, and a willingness to question the story you call “me.”

** PLEASE NOTE ** this particular session is not recommended for people experiencing severe mental health concerns unless they are experienced contemplatives or meditators.

Due to limited spaces, could you please RSVP here and/or on Facebook so I can keep a record of who will be attending?

A donation of $5.00 would be welcome to help cover the cost of the Community Centre facilities, but is not essential. Tea and coffee is provided.
