Lake George Narrows - day trip

Details

Description: A day trip in and among the Islands of Lake Georges famous Narrows. This is a favorite spot of mine, we are doing it later in the season to avoid the in-season boat traffic and to enjoy the wonderful fall colors of the mountains that surround Lake George.
The plan is to paddle north past Hen and Chickens and Fourteenmile Island, crossing the Narrows and exploring the islands in the middle of Lake George. We will stop for lunch at one of these day use islands or peninsulas, I hear the store on glen Island serves Sandwiches and ice cream.

NOTE: dogs are not allowed on Glen Island or any of the Lake George Island Campground facilities, this includes all of the public islands.

Difficulty: Easy-Intermediate, if the weather is calm and boat traffic is light this should be an easy flat water paddle of anywhere from 5-10 miles. However if the wind picks up or if traffic is heavier than expected the water can be very choppy.
The launch point is around 500’ from the closest parking spot and the trail down is a little rocky and somewhat steep. With that being said, because this is a big lake a kayak would be safer option, carts can be used on the trail, but you will need help with heavier boats.

Safety: PFDs are required to be worn on our trips. A whistle or appropriate sounding device is also required. Because we will be on a major lake try to wear bright colors and/or have a safety flag for visibility. Dress appropriately for the weather, this is a late season paddle, a wet or dry suit may be appropriate for the weather and water temp, remember to “dress for the swim”. A dry bag with a towel, dry clothes and safety gear like a first aid kit is a good idea. Most of the trip we will be close to land, but while crossing the Narrows we may be as much as a few hundred feet from land in any direction. Please try to stay together as a group when crossing the lake.
