Raquette Lake to Browns Tract Day Trip, Part of optional Eighth Lake camp trip
Details
This is a stand alone one day trip being done in conjunction with the optional Eighth Lake Base Camping Trip, the first of four day trips in this area. The plan is to put in at Raquette Lake and paddle towards Browns Tact Pond, exactly how long and to where we paddle will be up to the group. There are three options for this trip; the first is simply to paddle to Browns tract pond, look around and paddle back, that is a minimum of 12 miles, round trip, without exploring the pond. Option 2 is to paddle to the pond back track about a mile and do a 0.75 mile carry to a parking spot on NY-28. With the carry, backtracking and exploring total distance is 8ish miles. Option 3 is the same as option 2, but instead of stopping at the parking spot on NY-28 we coninue on to Eighth Lake campground, that adds another 0.5 miles to the carry (total of 1.25 miles) and 1.5 miles of paddling for a total trip distance around 10 miles. If we decide on option 2 or 3 we will have to shuttle cars, it may be easier to make Raquette Lake the end point. Bring lunch to eat while we are out. The launch is a 15 minute drive from the campground.
Difficultculty: Easy - Intermediate, this is all flat water mostly on a winding stream, but the wind can come up on Raquette Lake and the distance will be over ten mile, contain a portage, or both.
Safety: PFDs are required to be worn at all times, a whistle and white lightt are also required. This willl be the first official day of fall so watch the forecast and dress appropriately.
