Goodnow Mountain Snowshoeing trip
Details
Day trip up Goodnow Mountain to the fire tower. As a hike this is a relatively easy 2 miles to the summit with a little more than a 1,000’ of elevation gain, 4 miles round trip. As it is winter we willl be hiking in snow shoes so it willl be a little more difficult. There are good views at the summit with the best at the tops of the fire tower, be careful climbing the tower the stairs are likely to be slippery. Bring lunch for the summit. Right now the forecasted high is just below freezing with a chance of light snow in the morning, I like hiking while it’s snowing, but a change to freezing rain or sleet will cancel the hike.
Safety: Snow shoes are required, even if the trail is broken hiking without them can lead to post holing which is dangerous for you and others. For this hike additional traction like micro spikes is probably not required, but I would bring them to be safe. Dress in layers, and avoid cotton, it is important to stay warm while avoiding sweating, I normally bring 4 layers (base, insulating, outer and a water proof shell). Be sure to bring plenty of water.
