Beyond R Shiny. Building Web Apps in R with the React Ecosystem

Shiny has two limits. It keeps a live R process running for every user, which makes it costly to host and hard to scale. And Shiny apps tend to look alike, because they are built from the same few layout functions. Two new R packages address these limits, using React libraries under the hood. reactRouter runs the app in the browser instead of on an R server, so a simple app can be shared as a static HTML file. And muiMaterial lets you design the look of your app yourself, with a large choice of ready-made parts from Material UI, a popular React library. The talk covers what you gain, what it costs, and when Shiny is still the better choice.
