Earl’s Court Walk

Details

Join us for a lovely stroll though Earl’s Court. Earl’s Court has been a temporary home for many peoples seeking refuge or just passing through. Belgians settled here during WW1 when their country was turned upside down by the War, the Poles settled here during and after WW2 giving the area the nickname the “Polish Corridor”. The Australians descended on the area in the 60’s and 70’s earning it another nickname “Kangaroo Valley”, now it is “Little Manila” after the Filipinos who have made it their home from home.

On the walk we will visit the site of old Manor House where the original Earl of Oxford set up home. Another lowly aristocrat who set up home here was Diana Spencer she lived in a humble two bedroomed flat until she caught the eye of the Prince of Wales and the rest is history as they say. The 80’s film An American Werewolf in London was filmed here, but fact is more horrific than fiction and three notorious serial killers picked up their victims from a well known gay pub in the area. On a happier note we will also pass the Troubadour coffee house which was a Mecca for up and coming music stars such as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and Elton John. Also on our route will be the Brompton Cemetery where Beatrix Potter used to stroll and let her imagination run wild. From the grave stones she resurrected Mr Nutkin, Mr McGregor, Jeremiah Fisher, and even Peter Rabbit. All of these characters now grace the pages of her popular children’s books.

The walk is about three miles long should take about twoish hours. We will meet by the Earl’s Court Road exit to Earl’s Court Station at 13:00. Your guide will be Michael (a bearded young man in his sixties) I will be wearing a Green tourist guides badge around my neck. If you have any problems finding us I can be reached on 07988224846. The walk is a very reasonable £8 and we will have a post walk coffee at the end of our adventure. The walk will finish close to Earl’s Court Station.
