We’re heading to the River Great Ouse and the wide-open landscapes of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve for a day out packed with water views, wetlands and long riverside stretches.

This 20 km circular route follows peaceful trails from St Neots up to Little Paxton, before opening out into the lakes, reedbeds and winding paths that make Paxton Pits such a standout place to walk.

Expect a satisfying mix of riverbanks, gravel paths, nature reserve tracks and quiet farmland edges. Although the route is mostly flat with the distance means we’ll be moving steadily throughout the day — perfect if you enjoy covering ground or are building towards longer spring and summer adventures.

Start/Finish: St Neots Station
Distance: 20.3 km
Time: Approx. 6 hrs including breaks
Total Ascent: 14 m
Grade: 2.5 – Moderate–Challenging (long but flat)

As we weave through the nature reserve, keep an eye out for wintering waterfowl, grebes and cormorants feeding on the lakes, and the chance of a kingfisher flashing blue along the riverbank. The open views and wide skies make this an uplifting landscape to explore on foot. We return south on broad riverside paths and green corridors, finishing back at St Neots with a very satisfying 20 km in the legs.
