This Hike can be as Easy as you want to make it or as challenging and difficult as you choose.

** This is because the original Hike is 18 miles long and we are planning to do this challenge. However there are easy exits to nearby train stations along the hike path every 45 to 60 minutes of walking. So you can take an early exit whenever you want.** The Hike path is Flat. No Steep Hills.

🚶‍♀️ LONDON’S MOST POPULAR CANAL HIKE 🌊

From Mile End to Broxbourne – 18 Miles of Hidden Beauty, History & Adventure 🚲🌿

📅 Date: As stated above.
📍 Start: Mile End Station (East London)
⏰ Meet: 8:00 AM sharp Hike starts at around 8.15 AM
🎯 Finish: Broxbourne Station (around 7:30–8:00 PM)
📏 Distance: 18–19 miles (flat, mostly towpath)
🥾 Difficulty: Flexible – easy or challenging, your choice! You can make it short by finding the nearest exit along the Hike. There are exits every 30 to 60 minutes of walking. Or You can choose to complete the full length of the full challenge to Broxbourne Station completing all 18 miles. You would need a torch 🔦 or head torch for the final 1 or 2 hours of the Hike as we expect to finish around 7 pm which is slightly 2 hours after sunset.

NB: Hike is oyster card Friendly. All nearby train stations along the Hike route will accept oyster card for travel.

🌇 About the Hike

Join us for London’s ultimate canal adventure — a full-day journey from Mile End in East London to Broxbourne in North London, following the Regent’s Canal and the River Lee Navigation through some of London’s most beautiful and historic waterways. 🌿🚶‍♂️

This hike is flat all the way (no steep hills!) and gives you the freedom to make it as easy or as challenging as you want:

✅ Easy Option: Enjoy 1–3 hours of canal-side walking and exit at any nearby station — there’s one roughly every 60 minutes along the route! 🚉
💪 Full Challenge: Take on the full 18–19 mile route all the way to Broxbourne Station — a rewarding full-day adventure that finishes just after sunset 🌅 (carry a torch 🔦 for this full 18 mile challenge just in case).

We’ll take regular short breaks throughout the day and have a long lunch break around 1 PM for refuelling and relaxing by the water 🥪☕.

🏙️ The Journey

Your adventure begins at Mile End Station, where we join the Regent’s Canal — one of London’s most iconic waterways, built in the early 19th century (1820) during the city’s industrial revolution. Originally used to transport coal, timber, and goods, this canal is now a peaceful green corridor cutting through the heart of London 🌳.

We’ll pass by:

Victoria Park 🎠 – London’s oldest public park (opened 1845), once known as the “People’s Park,” beloved by East Enders for over a century.

Hackney Wick 🎨 – buzzing with street art, warehouses turned into creative spaces, and canal-side cafés.

Tottenham Marshes & Lea Valley 🌾 – vast green spaces filled with wildlife, kingfishers, and swans gliding along the River Lee.

Waltham Abbey & Broxbourne Woods 🌲 – marking the final stretch of our tranquil journey as we reach the Hertfordshire countryside.

Each section tells a story of London’s transformation — from Victorian industry to modern urban nature reserve. The Regent’s Canal and Lee Navigation were vital arteries that powered the city’s trade, connecting East London’s docks to the River Thames and beyond 🚢.

🥤 Short breaks every hour or so
🍽️ A longer lunch break around 1 PM – bring a packed lunch and plenty of water (there are a few cafés along the way if you fancy a treat!)

We’re heading to the beautiful beaches of Norfolk to witness one of nature’s most heartwarming sights — hundreds of adorable baby seals! 🦭💙
Every winter, between November and February, the beaches between Horsey and Winterton become home to more than 5,000 Atlantic grey seals, making Norfolk one of the best and largest seal-viewing spots in the world.
You’ll see fluffy newborn pups, playful young seals, and giant males lounging on the sand. 🐾 Volunteers will be nearby to answer questions and help ensure everyone enjoys this special wildlife experience safely.
After our gentle 6–7 mile easy coastal walk, we’ll head to a local country pub at 4:00 PM for a well-deserved late lunch and a chance to relax, chat, and share photos before heading back to London. 🍻🥧

The Atlantic grey seals of Norfolk are one of the largest breeding colonies in England. Each year, female seals return to the same beaches to give birth — and the pups, born with white fur, stay close to their mothers for about three weeks before heading into the sea.

🥾 About the Hike
This 12-mile circular route begins and ends at Guildford Station, taking us through some of the most beautiful and historically fascinating spots in the Surrey Hills. Expect sweeping countryside views, peaceful woodland paths, and plenty of photo stops along the way 📸.
We’ll be exploring:

⛪ St Martha’s Church on the Hill
Our trail will take us up to St Martha’s Church, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Surrey Hills. Sitting high on St Martha’s Hill, this historic church dates back to the 12th century, and offers breathtaking panoramic views across the North Downs and the Weald.
The church, dedicated to St Martha of Bethany, was once a medieval pilgrimage site on the Old Pilgrims’ Way between Winchester and Canterbury. To this day, people visit for its spiritual tranquillity, spectacular scenery, and peaceful atmosphere — it’s truly a magical spot 🌄✨.

💥 Chilworth Gunpowder Mills
Deep in the woods near Chilworth lies the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, a fascinating glimpse into England’s industrial past. Founded in the 1620s, these mills produced gunpowder for over 300 years, supplying the British military during the Napoleonic Wars and World War I ⚔️.
Today, the site is a scheduled ancient monument, with beautiful riverside paths winding among moss-covered ruins and information boards that bring history to life. It’s a peaceful yet powerful reminder of the area’s contribution to Britain’s past 💣🌿.

🍇 Passing a Famous Vineyard
During our route, we’ll pass by one of Surrey’s well-known vineyards, where the gentle slopes and chalky soil make ideal conditions for English sparkling wine production. The views across the vines are simply stunning — perfect for a photo stop 📷🍷.

🏰 Guildford Town & Castle
We’ll also spend some time exploring Guildford, a charming market town rich in history. The highlight is Guildford Castle, built shortly after the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror’s son. Its tower and gardens are beautifully preserved, offering a lovely spot to end our day 🏰🌸.

London Waterloo station 8.15 am prompt - for the 9.00am train to guildford. Try to get there earlier than 8:20 am so you will have time to find the group.

From Guildford Station we will walk The North Downs Way to Martha’s Hill and more. Enjoy the Outdoors. Relaxed pace (2 miles per hour).

Our hike will take us through beautiful countryside, expansive open woodlands along the River Way. Guildford is famous for its historic buildings and cobbled street, of which we will see many, there are truly breathtaking views from St Martha’s Hill for as far as you can see.

What to bring

Suitable hiking clothes & footwear - ideally hiking shoes. Hat gloves if cold, water proof jacket and trousers. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Hiking boots are advisable. Some areas during the hike will be dense and muddy.

Probability of rainfall is not important. Volume of rainfall expected is more important information than probability of rainfall.

This event is an extreme 24-hour adventure combining:

✔️ The full 14 Sisters Challenge (approx. 20–21 miles)
✔️ Finishing at 10pm–12am, in darkness
✔️ A night of Winter Wild Camping — either on the cliff edge or hidden in the forest (depending on wind conditions)
This is NOT a normal hike.
This is NOT for beginners.
This is for people who want to push their limits and treat this as training for bigger challenges like the National 3 Peaks in 24 hours, Ben Nevis, Snowdon, or K2-style winter endurance preparation.
