๐ฐ A Touch of History
Box Hill has inspired writers, poets, and painters for centuries. The name โBox Hillโ comes from the box trees (Buxus sempervirens) that naturally grow on its slopes. It became famous in Jane Austenโs novel Emma, where a picnic on Box Hill sets the scene for one of the bookโs most memorable moments.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Box Hill was a fashionable destination for Londoners seeking countryside escape. During the Victorian era, it became a popular picnic and walking spot โ and later a National Trust site (since 1914), protecting its rich flora and chalk downland wildlife ๐ฆ.
During the 2012 London Olympics, Box Hill gained global fame again as the challenging climb in the cycling road race route ๐ดโโ๏ธ โ a true British icon for outdoor lovers.
