Lichtenberg Mountain- Snowshoe- Advanced Skills

Details

With the snow we had last week, and the snow we will be getting during this week, we have a great opportunity to experience one of the best spots for back-country adventure. A truly exceptional place with great rewards.

The weather forecast for Sunday March 1 is looking great with mostly sunny skies and light wind.

You must be in excellent shape to do this hike- We will be moving fast with few breaks. We will travel on steep snow slopes with some exposure.

Located in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Lichtenberg Mountain is the high spot above Lake Valhalla just north of Stevens Pass. It is an easy destination during most months, and winter months make it more appealing to outdoor enthusiasts.

Approximate Route

With it's close proximity to highway 2, and a summit overlooking Lake Valhalla, Lichtenberg is a perfect snow scramble this time of year. The hike is physically and mentally demanding, but it is not technical, requiring advanced snow skills.

Lichtenberg Mountain offers back-country skiers and snowshoers options for a north-side climb, a south-side route, or a circuit going up one side and down the other.

Once at the summit, enjoy great view of Glacier Peak, Mount Baker, Big Chief and many other mountains.

Hike Stats:

Round trip: 8-9 miles miles

Elevation Gain: 2,200 ft

High Point: 5,844 ft

Skiers are welcome to join the group, but we may place skiers in a separate vehicle.

Gear:

Snowshoes, ice axe, microspikes or crampons, hiking poles, headlamp and spare batteries, map and compass or GPS, 10 essentials, food and water for the day, hiking boots, wind and sun protection, warm clothing, great attitude and a bright smile.

Directions to Smithbrook Rd- Trail head: (Aout 90 minutes)

The most popular route up is in winter from Smithbrook Road. Because the road isn't plowed, you'll have to travel 2 miles up the snow covered road.

Take Highway 2 east from Everett to Stevens Pass. Going down the east side of the pass, the highway will split. Once it does, look for the cut back road to get going westbound again. Go west to a large pull out area on the right just before the Smithbrook sign, 1/4 mile before the road.

NW Forest Pass Might be required at TH
