Details
Meeting in the parking lot @1:00PM, hiking starts @1:15PM.
Hiking distance 4 miles.
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area preserves a rare Piedmont monadnock rising above the Eno River just northwest of Durham. Within its 221 acres, the park offers quiet forest escapes through mountain laurel and rhododendron thickets, a summit overlook ideal for sunset views, and peaceful ponds offering casual fishing and picnic spots. This natural relic supports the rare brown elfin butterfly and other Ice Age-relic species. With roughly three miles of hiking trails and free entry, it’s an accessible refuge for nature study and serene outings.
Occoneechee Mountain, the highest point in Orange County, NC, reaches an elevation of 867 feet, offering a summit overlook with views of the Eno River and surrounding landscape, making it a unique Piedmont geological feature with trails for hiking and exploring its diverse habitats.
The trails are rated moderate, rocky in many places with elevation changes.
