(Overnight) Fall Foliage XXI: Cataloochee- GSMNP
Details
Join THOG for its 21st annual Fall Foliage Event which will include a hike to Hemphill Bald and Elk Watching. We will be car camping at a group site in the Cataloochee area this year at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. No oversized tents, please. We’ll hike to Hemphill Bald, an approximately 10 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain of around 1,800 FT. We’ll be rewarded with a beautiful 180 degree view of the Smokies at the summit. We will have lunch at the summit as well.
Before you RSVP, please make sure you read this event description completely!
When you RSVP, you will be asked a Three-Part Question that needs to be answered. THOG Organizers, feel free to sign yourself up for this event at anytime. More spots will be opened on September 1st.
Hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended due to the terrain. Be sure to bring your own camping gear, i.e., tent, pad, sleeping bag, etc.
The highlights of this trip include the Fall Colors, views from Hemphill Bald and Elk watching.
Carpooling is necessary and carpools will meet on Friday at 9AM in Chapel Hill. This remote campsite can only hold 5 cars. Camping is for 2 nights. Only vehicles that will have at least 3-4 attendees will be allowed to park at the campsite. We’ll discuss carpool options as the trip gets closer.
YOUR RSVP IS YOUR COMMITMENT TO THIS TRIP. Late cancellations (cancellations made within 7 days of the event) or no shows without an emergency will be noted in your THOG account and could affect future rsvp's. Prior late cancellations and no-shows may affect your RSVP to this event.
Be sure to bring enough food for meals/snacks for Friday dinner through at least breakfast Sunday. The temperatures in this area are typically chilly by this time so bring clothing layers- jacket, gloves, and hat. There are bathrooms but no showers.
Approximate costs per person for camping and firewood will be $5-$10 based on about 18 participants.
This is bear territory. Food and items with scents (i.e toothpaste, lotions, etc.) must be properly stored.
Full details will be sent to participants via email or Meetup message after RSVP's close. Failure to respond to the email will result in your RSVP being removed.
If you are on the Waitlist, make sure you check your status in case you are added to the "Going" list.
