Linda pointed out a review of Heart Rate monitors compared for accuracy which confirmed my impression - not very accurate. There are nonetheless a million products coming out including an Apple version with round corners for twice the cost... - actually I made that up..., but the technology is the same, Apple getting on the bandwagon. Again, I'm not sure this accuracy matters for what most people need from heart rate- but that is variable also.

I would be interested to know the details. There are battery tradeooffs with how much intelligence you can put into signal-vs-noise processing of the light signal, a stripped down pulse oximetry signal. Perhaps Stephane will give us a tutorial, having dealt with similar issues with the accellerometers.
