Holly Clayson will explore little-known, forgotten and erased aspects of the Eiffel Tower's identity when it first arose in the French capital in 1889. The tallest structure on Earth, it was the centerpiece of that year's Exposition Universelle. She will discuss the Tower's use of profuse iron ornament and illumination as surveillance alongside a consideration of its function as the emblem par excellence of Republican Imperialism. She will also discuss the imagery of the Tower in the visual arts.

S. Hollis “Holly” Clayson was Professor of Art History at Northwestern University for 35 years and retired in 2020 as Professor Emerita of Art History and Bergen Evans Professor Emerita in the Humanities.
