From Rails to Ruby: Building Something Fun Without Rails
When most developers think of Ruby, they think of Rails. But Ruby is much more than its most famous framework. In this talk, we’ll step away from the Rails mindset and explore how to build something fun and practical using just Ruby itself.
We’ll look at how Ruby’s expressive syntax, built-in standard library, and flexible object model make it a joy to prototype outside the Rails world. This session is designed to stretch your perspective on what Ruby can do, highlight lightweight approaches to problem-solving, and inspire you with demo-friendly examples that anyone can try.
About the speaker:
Nduati Kagiri is a Freelance Software Engineer with 4+ years of experience writing code that actually works (most of the time 😄). He is fluent in Ruby on Rails, Django, and React — basically, if it's a web app, He's your guy.
He used to be a Code Reviewer at Microverse, where he reviewed code from developers all over the world — and yes, he has seen it all: the good, the bad, and the “wait, does this even run?”
What he loves most about software engineering? It's like solving puzzles with superpowers — except the puzzles can run a business, power a platform, or make someone’s day better.
His secret sauce for great results? Clean code, clear communication, and caffeine-fueled focus.
What is Nairuby?
Nairuby is a chapter in Nairobi under the African Ruby Community an organization that was started in 2010. The community currently has a reach of over 4000 members spread across East Africa, made of developers (Engineers), entrepreneurs, designers, and freelancers. In terms of development and demonstrations, the community focuses on ruby technologies and frameworks, which are all open source and widely used by startups to prototype and carry out proof of concept with a go-to-market strategy.
The community hosts weekly and monthly meetups in different cities in East Africa. The community brings you Ruby Conference every year with different themes to fill the gap that exists between school and industry and in return helps spur innovation and growth in contribution to the global economy.
Nairuby brings entrepreneurs, developers, Designers, and open-source contributors. Why? We believe in a holistic approach through, entrepreneurship “Solution approach” and open source we can solve so many problems. This in return empowers everyone who attends with technology “tool” and entrepreneurship “Methodology” to reach their fullest potential and inspire the rest of the world and their communities.
