About the talk

In this hands-on workshop, we will dissect how embeddings, vector similarity search, and large language models interact at a systems level to power real-world AI applications, with a hands-on demo using AWS services, and using a local setup to understand how the system itself works under the hood.

We will dive deep into chunking strategies, embedding generation, vector indexing, prompt construction, and inference orchestration — with explicit attention to cost optimization, IAM security, and scalability constraints.

About the speaker:

Allan Kariuki - A Software Engineer and Cloud Architect with over 5yrs of experience building and maintaining applications. He currently works as an independent consultant for various firms helping companies plan, design, build, and maintain applications serving customers at a global scale.

Nairuby is a chapter in Nairobi under the African Ruby Community an organization that was started in 2010. The community currently has a reach of over 4000 members spread across East Africa, made of developers (Engineers), entrepreneurs, designers, and freelancers. In terms of development and demonstrations, the community focuses on ruby technologies and frameworks, which are all open source and widely used by startups to prototype and carry out proof of concept with a go-to-market strategy.
