People + AI: Better Together Than Either Alone
Combining complementary strengths to see more, understand more, and act more effectively

This session asks the question “what people can become capable of doing when human and AI strengths are deliberately combined.” Alan presents that AI’s greatest opportunity is not replacing people, but helping people exercise greater agency and develop more capability. People have a great capacity for empathy and creativity that is beyond AI’s current abilities. But they also have limitations. They have difficulties seeing the impact of their decisions on other parts of the system they are in. They also can only attend to so many issues. These tend to have untoward consequences and often has people play it safe and lose agency. A properly designed AI can fill much of that gap by providing context-sensitive interaction at scale—helping people understand the system they are in, surface concerns and alternatives, make better-informed decisions, and learn from evidence.

Agile didn’t promise speed. It promised sustainability.
The original Agile Movement was never about pumping out code at breakneck speed. It was about building robust, adaptable software and creating healthier, human-centred workplaces. It promised autonomy, trust, and environments where people were empowered to make meaningful decisions.
For the most part, we missed that mark.
Over the last two decades, workers were subjected to micromanagement, rigid tools, and metric tracking. Managers, too, were trapped in a system few truly understood. While delivery pipelines improved, the human potential latent within our organisations remained largely untapped.
